When I was young, I lived hearing people say, “You’re pretty, but your chin is long.” It wasn’t something I absolutely had to touch, but I’m a perfectionist and have severe appearance-related compulsions, so I’m the type to constantly put down my own looks. (Earlier this year, I didn’t like my eyes, so I had double eyelid surgery at a one-doctor clinic outside Seoul.) That was the beginning. To get straight to the point, I suddenly became fixated on facial contouring. Even when I took photos, my face looked long, so I didn’t take many pictures, but I strongly wanted surgery right away, so I immediately did online research and decided to go up from the province for hospital consultations.
Thursday (August 1) I had a consultation at Roh Jong Hoon Plastic Surgery. The wait for the consultation wasn’t long. The consultant immediately proceeded with the consultation. After that, I had a CT scan and consulted with the director. The short waiting time was actually an advantage. I was worried that if he were too busy, he might not be able to pay attention to my surgery. The director’s style is principled and analytical. I liked that the most.
My cheekbones were not very prominent, my mouth protruded slightly, and my chin was a little long, but it was not a “beauty chin.” My lower jaw was developed, and he immediately analyzed and explained the face that only I know about just as analytically as I do, so my trust increased. He slowly and specifically explained what surgery would be performed. Since it is a one-doctor clinic, the facilities were not as flashy as those in large plastic surgery buildings, but that actually made me trust it more in a conservative way. It made me feel like they perform surgery practically and charge a reasonable amount. Because I have a bad image of large hospitals due to shadow doctors, proxy surgery, factory-style systems, etc., it appealed to my own life experience.
▶Procedure: 7 mm chin osteotomy + cortical bone removal + square jaw reduction + chin setback [2 types of contouring] ▶Price: 6.1 million KRW (cash price, 500,000 KRW deposit) ▶CCTV viewing available from day 3 ▶An anesthesiology specialist is on site ▶One day of inpatient treatment after surgery
I scheduled the surgery date right away. I had already accumulated a lot of information through searching, so I thought going around to other hospitals would just be a waste of time without much meaning. They said I needed a health checkup before general anesthesia. With general anesthesia, underlying respiratory conditions or bleeding-related conditions can interfere with surgery. Since I had recently had a health checkup, I decided to send the results to the consultant by text. Instead of visiting a health screening center separately, they substituted the report, and on the same day (Thursday), the consultant brought a blood collection kit, drew my blood, and took it. I was taken aback, but because the consultant was someone capable of drawing blood, I actually trusted her much more. There are so many consultants who lack expertise while claiming to conduct consultations.
Sunday (August 4) - The day before surgery I fasted from 4 o’clock. They said to fast for 9 hours before surgery, but I was more thorough and fasted from 4 o’clock. However, my throat got so dry midway that I took one sip of water at 11 p.m. When I tried to withdraw cash, there was a withdrawal limit, so I transferred money around between several accounts and withdrew it that way. Those planning to pay for surgery in cash should check their transfer limits, withdrawal limits, and card status in advance before withdrawing.
Monday (August 5) - Surgery day 09:00 They told me to come by 9:30 a.m., so I went at 9, but the door was closed. When I contacted the consultant, she said they would open it shortly. 09:30 I was guided to the 4th-floor desk. 09:50 Before surgery, I listened to the precautions from the consultant and told her my surgery requests. We had already gone through them during the consultation, but I said them once more.
▶Requests: reduce the lower face due to developed lower jaw, make the side line natural so it does not become a dog-like jaw, leave a slight amount of the square jaw area, avoid a pointed face like a comb-pattern pottery shape, prefer an oval face shape, and improve the slight mouth protrusion
They took photos from several angles, I placed my personal belongings in the admission/recovery room, changed clothes, and waited for the consultation and surgery.
10:50 The director seemed to be preparing for surgery and was late.. After I waited about an hour, the consultant came to the admission room and said the director would be late to work because his mother was ill. At this point, my anxiety rose slightly. I worried whether personal matters would affect the surgery, or whether he was late for some other reason. I told the consultant it was fine if he was late, but to please make sure the surgery was done safely without any impact. 10:55 Five minutes later, they said the director had arrived and could proceed with the consultation and surgery, so I had the consultation with him. He drew lines on my face with a marker. He draws very delicately and well. He said osteotomy up to 7 mm was possible and reflected my requests as much as possible. He drew lines on the finishing part of the chin tip and told me to choose from several lines for how to finish the jawline. He gave me two sheets of paper and explained the before and after surgery precautions/reference points in detail (because he is principled..). I said, “Please take good care of me,” and waited again in the admission room. 11:00 They called me and I moved to the operating room. There were about three people inside, and they told me to lie down on the operating table right away, so I lay down immediately without being able to look around or take a moment. Maybe it’s better to have surgery quickly than to tremble for no reason. After I lay down, they inserted a thick needle into a blood vessel and fixed my arms and body. I suddenly became groggy, and after they said, “You’ll feel groggy because the anesthetic is going in,” I fell asleep about 5 seconds later.
14:20 A man woke me up saying, “You must not sleep!” I couldn’t tell whether it was the director or someone else. When I woke up, I was in the admission room, and I thought, “Oh, I had surgery.” My chin area hurt with a throbbing pain, as if someone were pressing down on it. It was tolerable pain, but the coughing and tube were very bothersome and uncomfortable. The hardest part was that it was difficult to breathe. Blood drains were attached on both sides of my lips, and I had an oxygen respirator and bandages on. A PCA pain-control injection was being infused through the IV. They said I shouldn’t sleep, so I tried to endure it while sitting up as much as possible, but the problem was that my lower back really hurt. For me, these small discomforts were bigger than the surgical pain. The admission room was a private room, so it was pleasant and private. Maybe because it is a one-director clinic, the admission room was not busy either, and I felt like they were focusing solely and carefully on me, which was very nice. The busier a hospital is, the more anxious you feel. I was truly grateful that the nursing staff kept checking the CCTV inside the admission room every 30 minutes. I want to thank them again. It felt like safety was secured, which was really good.
▶Underlying conditions: low blood pressure (90/55), thyroid nodule, anemia (decreased hemoglobin concentration), psychiatric condition (anxiety)
15:00 My blood pressure measured low. (70/55) Because a blood pressure issue occurred, they kept measuring it periodically and kept coming in every 30 minutes to 1 hour to check my condition. 16:00 I repeatedly slept and woke up. My blood pressure kept being low and came out as 70/50. My blood pressure was originally low too. I saw scratch marks next to the wall. I thought I must have scratched it because I was in pain.. 17:00 I tried to take a light nap again. The consultant came in. She came and explained the instructions once more. I was simply grateful that she didn’t just consider it over after surgery, but came and showed her face. That made me trust them more. 17:30 My lower back hurt a lot. The tubes attached to my body bothered me. I’m the type who tolerates pain well, but apart from the pain, it was so uncomfortable that I never wanted to do it again. I’m sensitive. 17:40 The director came in, visually checked my front chin and square jaw, and said, “It went well according to plan.” I like that the director is very straightforward. I was grateful that he came by once more. These things increase trust and make me feel stable. The director is the best. 18:00 I slept. I still hadn’t eaten anything. I felt like it might interfere with recovery, and I wasn’t in a state to eat. If you need to go to the bathroom, you have to call the staff. Fortunately, I had no dizziness or vomiting symptoms. The nurse came and administered antibiotics. Even with the PCA pain-control injection, it still hurt. 20:00 I was so bored and exhausted that I used my phone. My chin was throbbing and my lips were very swollen. I’m slowly getting used to it now. Hospitalization is essential. Even with this level of care, attention, and a PCA pain-control injection.. I hope others think very carefully before having the surgery. I don’t want to go through it again. 20:30 They came again to give me antibiotics. It seems most hospital staff have now left work. One or two people are staying overnight. 22:00 Antibiotics administered again 00:00 I couldn’t sleep, so I stayed up all night. 03:00 Went to sleep
▶Pain: throbbing chin + square jaw area (main), dry throat, nosebleed, throbbing at blood drain injection sites, dizziness, headache, lower back pain (sitting posture), throbbing lips, uncomfortable posture, dry mouth, blocked nose, sore throat, frequent coughing and bloody sputum, etc.
