About 31 years ago, when I was around 19, I had double eyelid surgery, and when I was 21, I had cheekbone reduction surgery. I vaguely remember the price of the double eyelid surgery. I think it was about 360,000 won (I saved New Year’s money and roughly pestered my mom to get the money together). The double eyelid surgery turned out well, and I’m satisfied. I went with my mom to get it done, but I don’t remember the price of the cheekbone reduction because my boyfriend (fiancé) paid for it. I decided to be admitted and went ahead with it by myself with my fiancé’s help. People always said that because my cheekbones stuck out, I would have a harsh fate, and that was always an obstacle in my mind, so with my fiancé’s help, I pushed those cheekbones in. At the time, I lived in Cheonho-dong, Gangdong-gu, and I finished both procedures over the years at a plastic surgery clinic nearby. I had no prior knowledge and was even reckless. I was determined to change my fate... Of course I also had personal vanity. The double eyelid surgery was okay, but for the cheekbone surgery, when I was hospitalized, it hurt so, so, so much that I thought, now I’m going to die. I think it took about a year for the swelling to go down. My fiancé was in the U.S., and my mom came to help me get discharged, but since I had secretly done something like this, I almost met a second miserable death at home at my mom’s hands lol
For a very long time, my lips didn’t move well, and I think there was quite a long period when I had no sensation in my face. My satisfaction with the surgery was only about 60%. When my friend had her jaw shaved, they apparently showed her the cut-off bone, but I didn’t even have anything like that. After escaping the pain and suffering, I wandered around at home for a very long time, just waiting for the day I could eat rice with kimchi and chew it heartily.
They said they made incisions right in front of both ears and cut out the cheekbones, but when I woke up, even the inside of my mouth and the palate area had been sutured, so from the area near my ears to the inside of my mouth, my face was extremely swollen. My mouth was full of gauze and cotton balls. I couldn’t even open my eyes, and they wouldn’t let me look in a mirror. My face, including my eyes, was of course tightly wrapped in a compression bandage. At the director’s recommendation, I stayed hospitalized a few more days before being discharged. Days that felt like the worst of nightmares passed, and I thought things would be okay, but as a side effect, for years blood seeped out drop by drop from the sutured areas beside my ears (vertical scars), so there were always scabs. I developed a habit of picking off the scabs and checking whenever I was bored. One year after the surgery I moved to the U.S., so it wasn’t easy to visit the hospital, but maybe because I lost some weight and things changed, it gradually got better. I don’t remember how many years it took haha, this memory of mine lol. Anyway, now I’m considering other plastic surgeries again (facelift, forehead lift, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, various canthoplasty procedures, upper and lower blepharoplasty), and I’m diligently, slowly, and quietly looking for hospitals so I don’t face the same hellish time as before. I want to take proper care of myself before I get even older haha. Thank you for reading my boring story.
