Some people may be posting reviews, but there are probably also many people coming to read reviews before getting double eyelid surgery, so I’m writing this here.
1. Make active use of cotton swabs - After double eyelid surgery, aside from swelling, bruising, and so on, all kinds of foreign matter can get caught during the recovery process, so there are more than a few itchy, ticklish, and awkward situations. At those times, if you avoid the surgical area and gently scratch only the itchy part with a cotton swab, it is obviously cleaner than rubbing with your hands, and it feels 10 times more relieving and better. When you have eye discharge, instead of using tissue, wet a cotton swab a little with something like saline solution for the eyes and wipe it off. It works really well.
2. When applying a cold compress, it is good to keep your eyes open
- It is very good for minimizing direct contact with the suture area and cooling only the lower area where the swelling has built up. You may worry that it might touch your eye, but when you actually hold the ice pack in your hand and apply it lightly only to the swollen area, it does not touch the eye at all.
Of course, do not apply the pack directly; place a tissue or gauze in between and control the temperature.
3. Before surgery and in the early period, manage what you eat
- In the early period after surgery, it is difficult to do things that involve getting water on the area, such as washing your face. So it is actually quite important to eat mainly plant-based foods rather than meat or greasy foods as much as possible, to minimize sebum production and reduce the risk of breakouts. Before surgery, briefly check online which foods you should not eat before surgery and avoid them. After surgery, I think you just need to avoid greasy foods until the swelling has mostly gone down.
Of course, the clinic may not tell you to avoid certain foods, but if you unnecessarily stuff yourself with greasy food and then end up with recovery issues or breakouts due to your constitution, that is all on you. Unless you were born with an unusually strong constitution, no human is completely free of inflammation, and most of this is due to modern unhealthy eating habits.
4. Before a double eyelid consultation, it is good to know whether your eyes need the “incisional method” or not.
I am not saying you need to learn what the incisional method is; I mean you should check whether the eyes that will undergo surgery are eyes that require incision or not.
All eyes can undergo the buried suture method, but there are eyes for which incision is absolutely more advantageous and necessary. If those eyes get the buried suture method, revision surgery is basically guaranteed at some point. Do not run a happy little mental simulation about the buried suture method just because you are scared of the incisional method and suffer again later. With all plastic surgery, it is more beneficial to judge coldly at the first surgery and settle it for life. For eye revision surgery, many cases involve people who got a buried suture method without knowing much, then as they got older developed pseudoptosis from drooping eyelids and had revision surgery by incision to remove skin.
During a double eyelid consultation, rather than spending time getting advice and learning about methods, it is more important to discuss the design and understand the doctor’s style. No doctor likes giving the same explanation and teaching double eyelid surgery basics every time a patient comes in.
5. Even after surgery, do not throw away the cold compress pads you received from the clinic; freeze and reuse them
Eye-mask-shaped ice pads are designed really well for cooling, because they can be fixed not only over the eyes but also across the face and the entire neck area. They are good to put on your forehead when you have a cold, and when it is hot, placing one on the back of your neck feels like heaven.
6. If you did not ask, but the doctor confidently brings up suturing first, consider having surgery there positively
Honestly, suturing after the surgery ends is more manual labor than technique, so most doctors do at least the basics reasonably well. However, being meticulous and detailed all the way through the final suturing is not easy from a service-work perspective. If a doctor brings this up first, it means they have a strong sense of duty about their surgery.
Usually, people who care about the finishing touches in any kind of work rarely have a weak middle process.
Of course, these tips were written based on my own experience as an ordinary person who got double eyelid surgery, so you can completely ignore them with no problem at all. Only people who find them plausible and want to follow them need to listen.
