In 2023 I had nose surgery using only autologous costal cartilage, and even though I usually smoked heavily, I did not develop inflammation. However, the shape after surgery was somewhat unusual. Two years after the surgery, due to the rib cartilage, the tip of the nose was sharp, and I do not know whether it was because of contracture or because the tip dropped, but the columella became sunken and the skin became wrinkled when seen from the diagonal angle. There was no pain or swelling, though. Even though I smoked a Marlboro 1 pack a day consecutively due to personal stress one week after surgery, I think I got through it without major inflammation-related problems.
