I had square jaw surgery two weeks ago

I am a man in my late 30s. I had square jaw surgery two weeks ago (2010.8.4). I also spent a long time looking for a hospital I could trust. Since I'm a man, my knowledge of cosmetic surgery is probably shallower than that of women, so I studied quite a lot while looking through various materials and sites. There are many surgical techniques, but I wanted to find a doctor who used the most traditional method, making a long incision inside the mouth wall from beneath the ear, (If the operation is done by making an incision in the inner cheek wall, placing a reflector, and operating that way, there is an angle that allows the power saw to reach freely from beneath the ear to the chin tip, and the doctor can cut while looking directly with their own eyes. I felt the retroauricular incision approach would not give a good angle. It also leaves a scar.) At the same time, I wanted someone who could cut skillfully and accurately with a single saw cut rather than grinding it down or making multiple saw cuts, and who would perform the surgery with the least bleeding. The nerves and blood vessels are intricately intertwined, and if something goes wrong, sensation can be damaged or there can be major problems linked to other areas such as the arms. So I judged that only someone who performs the operation cleanly and skillfully with minimal movement and bleeding would be safe. If the procedure involves grinding or multiple saw cuts, there is inevitably a greater risk of damage to the surrounding tissue and bleeding. After studying, it was clear that square jaw surgery is a major operation, but if the doctor understands the nerves and blood vessels in that area well and has the skill to remove only the square jaw bone without touching them, then I could be confident it is actually safer than other cosmetic surgeries that insert implants or even some dental surgeries. That makes sense, really. Bone has no nerves, so if only the bone is neatly cut to fit the facial shape with one clean saw cut, and the nerves and blood vessels are not touched, there is no reason problems should arise. For that reason, I decided to choose a doctor who does not advertise things like cutting with a laser or approaching from somewhere other than inside the mouth to make it simple and easy, but instead follows the standard method. I came to the conclusion that for facial contouring surgery, you only need to choose a doctor who does not rely on flashy but vague advertising, but rather a doctor who wins through proper technique and skill. While looking around, I came across Dr. ○○○, (to be honest, writing a review feels a little belated. He also answers questions in the consultation board on this site.) He was very frank and direct, explaining everything with complete clarity and leaving no room for concealment or ambiguity, and even going so far as to leave a signed pledge in the medical record saying he would take responsibility for everything in the procedure. So I thought, this is the doctor, and went to the hospital for a consultation, and sure enough, that was exactly how he was. He showed me the pre- and post-op photos of several past patients and even the removed bone fragments in person, and explained everything with no unanswered questions. He has the serious, modest air of a scholar, and that was the impression he gave during the consultation as well. (In fact, he really is a scholar. He has a medical doctorate from Korea University, studied under Dr. Baek Se-min, the global master of plastic surgery who first developed square jaw and cheekbone surgery, served as a professor at Inje University Paik Hospital and as head of plastic surgery at Eulji Medical School, and opened this hospital in its current location 16 years ago, where he has focused on facial contouring ever since, so he is someone skilled in both theory and clinical practice.) So I felt there was nothing more to consider, told them to schedule surgery as soon as possible, and had the operation four days later. When I woke up from anesthesia after the surgery, as Dr. ○○○ had always assured, he had finished the operation cleanly with just two pieces of gauze, without needing a blood hose or blood bag. I suffered far less than when I had implants placed three years ago. The swelling went down very quickly as well. Maybe it is because I am male and have a slim build, but since the surgery was done cleanly with minimal movement and bleeding, there was probably no reason for unnecessary swelling. After about ten days, the swelling was only left to the point of looking puffy, and now, after the stitches were removed, the cut and healing site from the surgery are still firm from the healing process (contracture), and only a little residual swelling remains. I have been eating normal meals without any problem since last weekend, and the numb or pulling sensation in the nerves was only a little present when moving my facial muscles until the day before yesterday, but now even that is gone. Because the surgery was done cleanly, it healed that much faster, and normal eating and daily life were much freer, so the swelling went down better as well. A few days ago, both jawlines were swollen asymmetrically, but that asymmetry improved day by day, and now they are roughly even. We also talked quite a bit during the consultation about what shape to cut, and as expected, it was good to follow the specialist doctor's opinion. I am very satisfied. On the 8th day after surgery, the stitches were removed, and the day before yesterday all the remaining stitches were taken out, and after removing the remaining stitches, the doctor organized and gave me all the materials: my pre- and post-op photos, photos taken during the surgery, photos of the removed bone fragments from both sides, and the original X-rays. I only met Dr. ○ for the first time this time and had surgery, so I have no personal stake, I am simply writing this review because I was so impressed by his candid, direct, sincere explanations with not a trace of ambiguity, his excellent surgical skill that matched those explanations exactly, his character, which is completely unlike commercial consultations that push you to get other procedures just because of money, (when I visited for the consultation, the doctor’s first words were, "I do not especially recommend cosmetic surgery for men, but since you came, let’s take a look." - that is what he said.) And even with such outstanding skill, he charges only a reasonable price, which I find admirable and worthy of respect. I was also stimulated by it, thinking that I should reach that level in the field I work in as well. Beyond simply receiving a medical service, it felt like I had a truly valuable encounter, and that makes me even more grateful. I think this surgery was the best possible outcome, but other people who have been treated by Dr. ○○○ may feel differently. Still, at least from what I experienced and felt, he is someone I can confidently recommend to others. Dr. ○○○ also recommends a scalp incision rather than an intraoral incision for cheekbone surgery, and after continuing to study it, I found that this is exactly the orthodox method used by Dr. Baek Se-min, the originator. In short, he is someone who solves things by the straightest and most standard method.
