Double-Jaw Surgery Reviews

Came to Korea for double jaw surgery while living overseas (very long)

<Reason> Since middle school, I was teased a lot for my underbite, and because of my malocclusion I couldn’t properly use my front teeth, so even cutting food into pieces was difficult. Because of that, I resolved to work hard, earn money, and definitely solve this problem. I thought orthodontic treatment would solve it, but all the dentists said that only double jaw surgery could fully improve it. I’m taking wedding photos this year, and I wanted to leave only my pretty side in them, so I decided to go ahead with double jaw surgery! So before coming to Korea, I searched online for a lot of information about double jaw surgery in Korea, and I saved a few hospitals recommended by locals. Among them, the YouTube channel called “Lee Seok-jae’s Double Jaw Life” appealed to me the most. As soon as I entered Korea, I started consultations, and I also had a consultation at W Y Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dental Clinic. The price was reasonable, and not only did the director and the manager kindly answer all my questions, but unlike other hospitals, they did not recommend any extra cosmetic procedures, so the consultation process was very comfortable and good! So that very day, I canceled all my other consultations and decided to have double jaw surgery and contouring surgery type 2 (square jaw, chin) at W Y on March 27. <Before surgery> I had never had surgery or been hospitalized in my life, so honestly I was more worried about general anesthesia than the surgery itself.. Fortunately, before surgery I underwent various detailed examinations and even received the test results, which helped me feel reassured enough to go ahead with the operation. The hospital tells you what you need during the hospitalization period and after discharge, along with precautions~ 1. During hospitalization: charger, extra underwear, hat (since you can’t shower for 3 days, to wear when discharged~), sauce container (for meals when you can’t open your mouth after surgery) 2. After discharge: baby toothbrush, pumpkin juice (to reduce swelling!), protein drinks (to consume for about 1-2 weeks) *For 1-2 weeks before surgery, you must stop taking medicines or foods that may affect liver function! And fast for 12 hours before surgery! (Focus on plain, simple things~) <Day 1 3/27 “Surgery day”> With excited and nervous feelings, I arrived at the hospital, changed into a patient gown, checked the wafer position once more (custom-fitted before surgery), had my final pre-op consultation with the director, and went into the operating room around 10 o’clock~ (My husband could watch the surgery process live on a monitor outside!) They started attaching a lot of devices to my body? and my last memory was talking about my height and weight. When I woke up again, the surgery had already ended!!! Looking at the time I took a selfie, it was 13:40, and it finished much faster than I expected!! But the first day was truly~ painfully~ awful My jaw hurt, my nose was blocked so I couldn’t breathe, if I bent my face forward even a little I got a nosebleed, and because I had to breathe through my mouth my throat was extremely dry, but I couldn’t drink water until 19:00… (Thankfully there was a humidifier). Of course, I couldn’t speak either (communicating with a drawing pad..) Then the long~ long~ night began.. If I could just sleep, I really had to be satisfied.. I couldn’t lie down properly or move around much, so my butt hurt so much... (Strongly recommend preparing a donut cushion..) Every few hours, the nurse came to check the ice packs, the drainage bag, and the urine container, and to give me painkillers and antibiotics. I seem to be sensitive to the medication given through the IV, because every time they injected it I felt like I was about to vomit, and once I actually threw up before I even had time to react... I was so grateful that the nurse immediately changed my patient gown again Personally, I think fear was greater than pain. Still, this is a major surgery where bone is shaved down, so I couldn’t tell whether the pain I was feeling was the normal pain everyone feels or pain from something going wrong with the surgery. I even wrote “I’m so scared because it hurts so much” on the communication pad and showed it to the nurse The nurse told me that on the first day I would feel like wondering why I paid money to suffer, but from the next day it would get much more comfortable and I’d be glad I had the surgery. I endured the first day hard as the nurse instructed, and I looked forward to the next day. <Day2 3/28> Finally, the day came when all the tubes could be removed!! The director personally showed me how to use the wafer~ Now I could go to the bathroom freely, and I also received swelling laser treatment~ (It doesn’t hurt!) In the afternoon, the nurse gave me a protein drink and mouth rinse, and I ate them using a sauce bottle! It was inconvenient, but I was still happy to drink something other than water! My friend and my husband came to visit, and we walked around together to help reduce swelling, but the dental staff said I had to get an X-ray, so I went to have one taken. Since it had to be taken while I was biting the wafer, I couldn’t breathe through my mouth and my nose was blocked, so I was scared The hospital nights were still long, but I was much more energetic than on the first day! Before sleeping, the nurse told me the discharge precautions and the return appointment date~ <Day3 3/29 “Discharge day”> Before discharge, I got swelling laser treatment once more, picked up the prescribed medicine from the pharmacy, and went home in my husband’s car, but if the car shook a bit, my jaw felt slightly numb.. As soon as I got home, I took a shower (never bend your head down!!!) and slept “sitting up” in bed for the first time in a long while…(I slept sitting up for a whole month to reduce swelling..) When I was discharged, the hospital gave me ice packs and a compression band, so I kept using them at home, and I endlessly drank protein drinks and pumpkin juice. Personally, the hardest part was taking medicine... I couldn’t breathe through my nose and couldn’t open my mouth, so I crushed big pills into powder and mixed them with water to take them… Every time I took medicine, it felt like hell… <Day4 3/30> I still can’t sleep deeply... Since I keep breathing through my mouth, I often woke up because my throat was dry Thankfully one of the prescribed medicines was a spray that clears nasal congestion, and if I use it before sleeping, it really helps a lot! When I woke up, I was even more swollen... But I had heard that days 4 and 5 are when swelling is the worst, so I wasn’t especially worried~ And again, all day at home I repeated drinking protein drinks and pumpkin juice, taking medicine, using ice packs and the compression band, drinking protein drinks and pumpkin juice, taking medicine, using ice packs and the compression band... over and over. I knew I should go for walks to make the swelling go down faster, but since I was only eating liquid food all day, I really had no energy to go outside... And even though my family was рядом, I couldn’t speak normally, so I communicated through KakaoTalk <Day5 3/31> The swelling went down a little compared with yesterday!! I had a bit of yellow bruising on my jaw and neck, but it doesn’t hurt~ For these past few days, sensation around my mouth still hadn’t recovered, so when I was breathing through my mouth I often drooled without realizing it And during this period, I sometimes get a little nosebleed too (I think maybe there was something left inside my nose from the surgery) So my mother-in-law gave me my niece’s baby towel, and for a moment it felt like I had gone back to being a baby The good thing is I don’t need to wash my hair myself or dry it.. They really took care of me like a baby <Day6 4/1> The nasal congestion got much better!! My left and right face were a little different in size, but the director said the swelling on each side can go down at different speeds, so I wasn’t worried~ So to reduce the swelling faster, I finally went for a walk today! But since I could only drink food, even a little activity made me hungry right away, so I went straight back home haha This became my daily life for a month, walking the dog wearing a mask and hat. Recently, because I couldn’t eat, someone like me who usually never watches mukbang at all ended up watching mukbang with my husband every night before sleeping, feeling vicarious satisfaction, and I already made a list of foods I want to eat when I can eat again~~ <Day7 4/2 “Hospital visit”> Finally the day came to remove the stitches!! The precautions said that after removing the stitches, I could brush with a small toothbrush, remove the wafer while eating, and eat seasoned porridge or soft foods that don’t need chewing, so I was really looking forward to it!!! I happily went to the hospital, had the stitches removed, and the director said the wound had healed well, so the stitches were removed smoothly (It hurt a little..) On this day I also paid the fee for having my wisdom teeth removed (extracted during surgery) I came home feeling happy, but maybe I overestimated myself too much. As soon as I got home I ate bread soaked in milk and jajangmyeon, but in the end I couldn’t finish it all (eating was so hard) and I got an upset stomach I think it was because I suddenly ate greasy food after not eating solid? food for so long... Still, I was happy to eat real food instead of liquid food>< <Day37 5/2 “Starting orthodontics”> A month had passed~ At last I threw away the wafer and started orthodontic treatment!! I went to the hospital, had an X-ray taken first, and then got the braces attached~~ The dental staff said the screws embedded in my gums (the ones placed during surgery) had healed well without inflammation, and since they might be needed later when moving the teeth, we decided to leave them for now (but inflammation developed next week;; haha) Only the upper braces were attached, because the space in front of my front teeth was too narrow for the appliance to be attached, so we first installed only the back teeth to create space. Next month, I’m scheduled to go and get the lower braces attached too~ I’m so excited!! As additional information, I’d like to share a few problems I experienced after surgery and the information and methods I got from the manager to solve them~ 1. While wearing the wafer, the space inside the mouth became narrow because of swelling, so mouth ulcers kept developing -> apply medicine or ointment for mouth ulcers and supplement vitamins 2. Dizziness often occurs because only liquid food is being consumed (especially when standing up) -> even if you can’t eat normally, you need to properly replenish calories (high-calorie foods) 3. Bleeding from the gums when brushing teeth -> the body condition and oral care are not good during this period, so there may be slight gum bleeding The most important point is! After undergoing major surgery, you really have to take extremely good care of your body!!! Don’t get complacent because your body starts to feel familiar; you always need to pay attention! My mother came to visit Korea (the day after I got braces), and after enjoying a 4-day, 3-night trip too enthusiastically, one of the 8 screws became inflamed and my jaw started to hurt (I was so worried I even dreamed that my jaw fell off...) So I went straight to the hospital for an examination, and the director immediately asked if I had been very tired recently just by looking at it... So they removed all the screws that couldn’t be used, and I took medicine for a week… That’s my double jaw surgery review~ I hope it helps those considering double jaw surgery~!
