Double-Jaw Surgery Reviews

The thing that scared me most was other people's stares. After double jaw surgery, confidence changed the most.

I received double jaw surgery + contouring surgery from Director Kim at Iyoo Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. I'm still a fairly new recovery patient compared to others, but I thought writing about my progress over the past month might help someone, so I'm leaving a review!

First of all, the reason I decided on double jaw surgery was not simply because I wanted to look prettier. I had been under a lot of stress for a long time because of my face and appearance, and even seeing my reflection in a glass window while walking, taking photos, or making eye contact with other people felt burdensome..!

After COVID, once I had to take off my mask, my sense that my face was very different from other people's only grew stronger. In particular, while I was in high school, I was bullied by classmates who called me a monster or a giant, and there were even times when they drew my face as a picture and mocked me as a group. As those things repeated, I came to think that all the big and small misfortunes in my life were because of my face, especially my jaw, and when people looked at me on the street, I felt like it was because my face looked strange. Also, whenever I saw friends my age laughing, I couldn't easily shake the feeling that they were laughing at me.

As time went by, depression, lethargy, and lowered self-esteem piled up, and the stress about my appearance became even worse. It wasn't just that I didn't like my face; I felt that my face was shrinking my relationships and daily life, and especially that my jaw was causing me to lose out in many ways. So rather than for purely cosmetic reasons, I decided to undergo double jaw and contouring surgery because I wanted to break free from the long-lasting stress and self-consciousness and live my daily life a little more comfortably.

While preparing for double jaw surgery, I looked into many hospitals, and the biggest reason I ultimately chose Iyoo Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was its specialty by field and systematic collaborative treatment system. Because double jaw surgery is a procedure that moves bone, I thought the process of adjusting the bite after surgery would also be important, and what I trusted most was that the oral and maxillofacial surgeon in charge of the surgery and the orthodontic specialist in charge of alignment each focus on their own field while working together. It was reassuring that one doctor was not handling every part of the process, but that the surgery and orthodontics were each handled by specialists who communicated closely and carried out treatment. From the surgical plan all the way to the end of orthodontic care, the fact that treatment was carried out through a systematic collaboration was the biggest reason I chose this hospital.

Now, one month after surgery, the major swelling has gone down a lot, and daily life has become much easier. I still can't open my mouth wide, but compared with right after surgery, the pain and discomfort have decreased a lot. Recovery was not as easy as I expected, but I’m satisfied because I can feel it gradually getting better over time. Compared with a month ago, I can feel that things have become much easier, so I'm looking forward to what changes may come next!!!
