Before surgery, my biggest concerns were my underbite, long face, and asymmetry. From the front, my jaw looked twisted to one side, and from the side, my jaw projected forward and made my whole face look long, which stressed me out a lot. Since the surgery was such a big decision, I was worried too, but if I was going to do it, I wanted both the functional aspects and facial balance to improve together, so that’s why I decided to go ahead. Around two months after surgery, once the major swelling had gone down, the changes in my face started to become clearly visible. The rate at which the swelling went down differed between the left and right sides, so I was a little sensitive at first, but as time passed I felt both sides gradually settling, which reassured me. I could eat most foods without much discomfort, and above all, the most satisfying part was that my previously asymmetrical jaw was brought much closer to symmetry and the jaw that had projected forward was noticeably set back. After that, it was mostly the small residual swelling around the philtrum and cheeks that slowly went down. The small swelling lasted longer than I expected, but my overall facial shape became much more balanced than before surgery, and the long-face and underbite impression improved naturally, so in the end I’m really satisfied. I’m also undergoing orthodontic treatment, so my teeth and face feel like they’re changing little by little, but I think that’s just the remaining swelling going down and my face settling into place naturally. Right now my face has mostly adjusted and it doesn’t look very obviously operated on. There’s still a little swelling left around the philtrum and cheeks, and a slight tingling sensation in the nerves, but that’s also improving gradually with time. More than anything, it’s becoming naturally better on the outside, and it’s clear that my facial balance is better than before, so I feel like I made the right decision to have the surgery. Before the surgery I was really worried, but now I think all that’s left is for the residual swelling and sensation to recover slowly. Thank you to Director Park Jae-bong at Max Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for naturally improving my facial shape
