I started to develop a more pronounced underbite from around the upper grades of elementary school. Before that, I was just a bit prominent in the chin area, but as I grew up it gradually became more noticeable. Every time I went to the dentist, the answer was always similar. This cannot be fixed with orthodontic treatment alone; there is no way except surgery~But even then, maxillofacial surgery had a strong image of being very risky and expensive, and although I wanted to do it in my heart, honestly I was a bit scared too, so I kept forcing myself to brush it off and lived thinking, I guess there is nothing I can do, I will just live as I am... As time passed, though, my underbite and malocclusion got worse and worse, and my self-esteem about my appearance dropped sharply. I kept thinking that people would look only at my chin when they saw my face, and I worried they might secretly think, why is her chin like that? so I became unnecessarily self-conscious and started to dislike taking photos more and more. Then one day I suddenly thought, do I really have to live my whole life shrinking away because of my chin? Before it gets even later, before I get older, I also want a normal jaw. That thought finally led me to decide on surgery.I searched for hospitals mainly through reviews. Since maxillofacial surgery is such a major operation, I thought a place with many real reviews would be better. The hospital I saw most often then was Y Oral. So I got consultations at Y Oral and at another hospital that my original dental clinic had connected me with. The other hospital had a structure where orthodontics were handled separately outside and only the surgery was done at the hospital, but I liked that Y Oral coordinated orthodontics and surgery together. And to be honest, the doctor was not the type who is extremely kind and talkative. He was a bit blunt, but that actually felt more trustworthy to both me and my mother. It did not feel like he was just saying nice things; it felt like he was telling us only what was necessary, so I thought this is really a hospital that focuses on surgery, and that is why I decided on Y Oral. While getting the consultation, they took face photos and X-rays and so on, and honestly it was a bit shocking... My facial issues were shown so plainly. In fact, when my mother came with me for the consultation, she was still somewhat unsure about the surgery. She had many worries too, like whether it would be dangerous and whether it was really necessary. But after the consultation, I was told that she changed her mind a lot and came to think that this was not just a cosmetic issue but something that really needed surgery functionally too. Hearing that made me feel a bit more at ease.I had pre-surgical orthodontic treatment for a total of about 1 year and 3 months, and after that I had maxillofacial surgery and contouring surgery of 2 types (square jaw, chin). On the day of surgery, honestly I was so nervous that my head was spinning, and the first night is what I remember most. I could not lie down, so I had to sleep sitting up, but strangely enough the part that hurt the most was my butt instead of the surgical site...The second day was the same. My butt hurt so badly from sitting that I felt like I was going crazy...Because the reviews around me said things like it is so hard, it is truly hell, I was extremely scared going in, but for me it was better than I expected. Of course it was hard, but it was not the horrific thing I had imagined.Honestly, the hardest part was not being able to eat what I wanted. That was the biggest stress...My swelling seems to go down fairly slowly, and because I seriously injured my foot two days before surgery and had to go to the emergency room, I was hardly able to go for walks during recovery. I think that also had some effect I have not even been two full months since the surgery yet, so my face is not fully settled, but what I am most satisfied with is that my bite has returned to normal. This really changes your quality of life more than you would expect.I still have post-surgical orthodontic treatment left, so I am most excited to see how much better it will get once everything is done. Before, my chin was the most assertive feature on my face, but after it receded, strangely my nose stood out more. And I used to hear that my face looked harsh because of my chin, but now my overall impression feels softer and rounder, so I think misunderstandings like that will definitely decrease compared with before. There is still swelling and I am still recovering, but so far all I can think is that I really made the right decision by having the surgery~
